HOW DARK DO YOU WANT TO GO?
Window tint percentage refers to Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the amount of visible light allowed through the glass. The lower the percentage, the darker the tint.
But darker does NOT automatically mean better heat rejection. Film technology matters. That’s why we offer shade choices across all three STEK film grades.
Example:
5% is extremely dark, while 70% is nearly clear. A high-performance ceramic or graphene ceramic film can provide significant heat rejection even at a much lighter shade.

WHY DOES THE FILM GRADE MATTER?

TEXAS WINDOW TINT LAWS & MEDICAL EXEMPTIONS
Texas has specific requirements for automotive window tint. We’ll help you choose a film and shade that fits your goals, but ultimately the vehicle owner is responsible for complying with applicable Texas law.
FRONT SIDE WINDOWS
Without a medical exception, Texas requires the windows immediately to the left and right of the driver to allow at least 25% Visible Light Transmission when the film and factory glass are measured together.
REAR SIDE & REAR WINDOWS
Texas does not regulate the side windows behind the driver. Rear-window tint is also unrestricted when the vehicle is equipped with qualifying outside mirrors on both sides.
WHAT ABOUT THE WINDSHIELD?
Texas permits compliant sunscreening material in the upper windshield area according to state requirements. Texas DPS also permits clear, untinted UV film anywhere on the front windshield without requiring a medical exemption.
Ask us about lighter ceramic and graphene ceramic options if your goal is reducing heat and UV exposure without substantially darkening the windshield.
NEED TINT FOR A MEDICAL REASON?
TEXAS ALLOWS MEDICAL WINDOW TINT EXCEPTIONS.
Certain medical conditions can make additional protection from sunlight or bright light medically necessary. Examples can include photosensitivity disorders, severe light sensitivity, certain autoimmune or skin conditions, eye conditions and other medical issues where a licensed medical provider determines additional sunscreening is necessary to safeguard your health.
Texas does not require a separate DPS-issued exemption certificate. Instead, the driver or occupant must have a signed medical exemption statement from a licensed physician or optometrist identifying the person and stating that window sunscreening is medically necessary.
The documentation should be kept in the vehicle and available to present to law enforcement when requested.

A few of the questions we hear most often about automotive window tinting, film shades and caring for your new tint.
DOES DARKER WINDOW TINT BLOCK MORE HEAT?
Not necessarily. Tint darkness controls visible light transmission, while heat rejection depends heavily on the technology used in the film. That’s why a lighter ceramic or graphene ceramic film can outperform a much darker entry-level film when it comes to heat rejection.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACTION, SMART AND NEX?
ACTION is our carbon-film starting point for appearance, privacy and value. SMART steps up to nano ceramic technology for increased heat rejection and comfort. NEX is our premium graphene ceramic option for customers looking for maximum performance, heat rejection and optical clarity.
DO YOU INSTALL CHEAP DYED WINDOW FILM?
No. We don’t use cheap dyed film. Our window tint lineup starts with STEK ACTION Carbon and moves up through SMART Nano Ceramic and NEX Graphene Ceramic. We’d rather offer a quality starting point than compete to install the cheapest film possible.
CAN YOU TINT MY WINDSHIELD?
Windshield installations must comply with applicable Texas law. If your primary goal is reducing heat and UV exposure without substantially darkening the windshield, ask us about our very light ceramic and graphene ceramic film options.
HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN ROLL MY WINDOWS DOWN?
Wait a minimum of 3–4 days before rolling your windows down after installation. For the best results, we recommend waiting a full 7 days whenever possible to give the window film plenty of time to dry and cure.
ARE BUBBLES OR HAZINESS NORMAL AFTER INSTALLATION?
Some temporary moisture, small water pockets or haziness can be visible while freshly installed film dries. The curing process varies with temperature, humidity and weather conditions. Don’t press, pick at or attempt to smooth the film while it is curing.
CAN YOU REMOVE MY OLD WINDOW TINT?
Yes. Existing film can be removed before new tint is installed. Removal requires additional labor and is quoted separately depending on the vehicle, condition of the existing film and difficulty of removal.
WHAT IF I NEED DARKER WINDOW TINT FOR A MEDICAL REASON?
Texas provides medical exceptions for qualifying individuals when additional window sunscreening is medically necessary. See our medical exemption section above for information about the required documentation and online evaluations available through TintedMD.
